Capitol Hill Housing seeks to develop a mixed-use building featuring affordable apartments along with commercial space at 24th and Union in the Central District.
Recently the City and community have come together for a neighborhood planning effort focused on the 23rd Avenue commercial corridor. Working with many city departments, the community has identified several priorities for the area. Two important priorities are the need for affordable housing and space for local businesses. This development would address both of these community identified needs.
Many lower income households are finding it difficult to remain in their neighborhoods in the face of rising rents. The development of affordable housing for low-income families at 24th and Union would help create critically needed affordability in the Central District. As in other CHH properties, leasing the ground-floor retail space to local businesses would be prioritized.
From 1968 to 1988, this site housed Liberty Bank, which was a financial institution that served the African American community. Capitol Hill Housing recognizes the importance of the site, and is working with the community to honor the history of Liberty Bank and to memorialize its cultural significance.
