Our guest speaker this year will be Denise Scott, Executive Vice President of Programs at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and a national leader in neighborhood revitalization. This event helps Capitol Hill Housing keep rents affordable for 2,000 Seattle residents.

Join Capitol Hill Housing and celebrate the grand opening of this extraordinary new building. Over 15 years in the making, 12th Avenue Arts is now an affordable home to more than 100 individuals and families, three community organizations, three theatre companies, locally owned businesses and secure parking for the Seattle Police Department.
Thanks to unprecedented support from the community, Capitol Hill Housing has raised the roof on 12th Avenue Arts!

We received over $47,000 during the GiveBIG online giving campaign, including nearly $10,000 in first-time gifts. We will also receive a $10,000 challenge grant, in addition to stretch funds from Seattle Foundation.
This support from our generous community will allow us to expand our Resident Services
program to even more of the families who call a Capitol Hill Housing apartment home.
Capitol Hill Housing seeks to develop a mixed-use building featuring affordable apartments along with commercial space at 24th and Union in the Central District.
Recently the City and community have come together for a neighborhood planning effort focused on the 23rd Avenue commercial corridor. Working with many city departments, the community has identified several priorities for the area. Two important priorities are the need for affordable housing and space for local businesses. This development would address both of these community identified needs.
Many lower income households are finding it difficult to remain in their neighborhoods in the face of rising rents. The development of affordable housing for low-income families at 24th and Union would help create critically needed affordability in the Central District. As in other CHH properties, leasing the ground-floor retail space to local businesses would be prioritized.
From 1968 to 1988, this site housed Liberty Bank, which was a financial institution that served the African American community. Capitol Hill Housing recognizes the importance of the site, and is working with the community to honor the history of Liberty Bank and to memorialize its cultural significance.
Construction of 12th Avenue Arts continues on schedule. Our capital campaign slogan, “Raise the Roof,” was made real as the roof of the building went on in January.
We recently gave a hard hat tour of the building to several supporters who were impressed with the completed volumes of the theater spaces and the outdoor deck spaces that residents will be able to use.
4Culture announced a new $50,000 grant to 12th Avenue Arts – their fourth grant for the project. You can join them and other supporters of this landmark development by making a donation online now. Gifts of $500 or more will receive name recognition on one of the new theater seats.

After two and a half years, the $4.6 Million Capital Campaign goal for 12th Avenue Arts has been reached.
The campaign achieved unprecedented support from arts organizations, small businesses and individuals. Attracted by the multi-user model, key arts funders including ArtPlace America, Washington Building for the Arts, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, 4Culture, Boeing and the City of Seattle provided more than a million dollars in contributions. This institutional support was complemented by the score of local businesses and hundreds of individuals who invested in a community-based arts facility that will be around for decades to come.
In order to build the best possible facility, we’re continuing to raise funds beyond this formal goal. Join the group of supporters of this campaign by making a secure, tax-deductible donation online.
Capitol Hill Housing has long worked to support small businesses, which are part of any healthy community. A focus of our work on 12th Avenue has been raising the profile of small businesses, and the neighborhood has thrived. The Jefferson apartments, a CHH building that had its grand opening in October 2012, has been nominated by Affordable Housing Finance Magazine as an Urban Design Finalist in its annual Readers’ Choice Awards. The Jefferson is the only project in the Pacific Northwest to be nominated in any category.

Go by the construction site of 12th Avenue Arts — 12th and Pine on Capitol Hill — and you’ll see that big hole starting to get filled up with re-bar and concrete!

On June 11, Capitol Hill Housing hosted its 8th annual community forum at Broadway Performance Hall. The focus of this year’s forum was the massive amount of development happening on Capitol Hill and how it is changing the neighborhood.
CEO Christopher Persons showed that there are over 30 proposed developments with more than 2,800 apartments and more than 250,000 square feet of commercial space coming to the Hill. Yet currently, the only affordable housing being developed on Capitol Hill is our 12th Avenue Arts building.
Panelists Knute Berger, Sally Clark, Elizabeth Dunn, A-P Hurd, Stephen O’Connor, and moderator Michael Wells talked about the increasing demand for development in the area and discussed possible ways to maintain affordability.
